Mockingjay – Part 1 Review: Unnecessary split but still delivers
Mockingjay – Part 1 is a little less interesting than its predecessors due largely to the splitting of the final book of Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games trilogy. The film still manages to pull off images of the ever-growing rebellion against the Capitol of a dystopian Panem while questions rather than answers keeps piling up until the end.
We know that most the fans of the franchise have read the book, including me, but it seems unnecessary that Lionsgate opted to split the film thus making Part 1 seems more like an overlong teaser trailer for the final film. The split causes the film to run short on action that its predecessors are known for.
Francis Lawrence still does a magnificent job especially with the portrayal of District 13 and its government even though there were a lot more going on in the underground city in the books that the film did not include or rather did not make it to the screenplay. Those certain scenes that did not make it were pivotal to Katniss' decisions because those events will lead her to question President Coin's motives and plans for the Mockingjay and future of Panem.
Speaking of Katniss, Jennifer Lawrence never fails to deliver us an intricate performance. The heroine's strong but emotionally distress persona projected perfectly.
Overall, Mockingjay – Part 1 may have given us a split we don't need but still it offers a strong entry of The Hunger Games film series with its political undertone a much more on the surface than the previous entries.
